Climate change lengthening allergy season, scientists warn

As temperatures continue to rise globally, allergy sufferers are facing longer and earlier allergy seasons, according to a group of scientists who recently published an appeal in Frontiers in Science. The appeal emphasizes the need for a global effort to mitigate the impact of climate change on diseases with an immune component.

The increase in pollen production due to the greenhouse effect, combined with pollution and alterations in the immune system, is leading to a rise in allergies worldwide. In Europe, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis is estimated at around 23 percent, with projections suggesting that by 2030, 35 to 40 percent of the Italian population will suffer from allergic rhinitis.

Experts are urging for a concerted effort to mitigate pollution and adapt to the changing environmental conditions to reduce the impact on human health. The combination of factors, including pollution, lifestyle changes, and diet, is contributing to the increasing number of allergy sufferers.

Pollen, which can trigger allergies even in non-allergic individuals by attaching itself to pollution particles, is becoming a significant concern. Pollen from polluted areas can contain harmful substances that worsen allergy symptoms and increase the risk of respiratory issues.

To combat these challenges, experts recommend taking precautions such as monitoring pollen bulletins, paying attention to weather conditions, and seeking proper medical diagnosis and treatment. Specific immunotherapy for pollen allergies is also recommended for long-term relief and improved quality of life for allergy sufferers.

As allergy seasons become more intense and prolonged, it is crucial for individuals to take proactive steps to manage their symptoms and seek appropriate medical care. By addressing the root causes of allergies and adopting preventive measures, individuals can better cope with the changing climate and its impact on their health.
