Analysis of MIR 2024 Places: Preferences and Trends among Non-EU Candidates

The awarding of MIR 2024 places has shed light on the preferences of both national candidates and those affected by the non-EU quota. Medical Writing has analyzed the profiles of these future residents and their choices for R1 positions in Spain. Of the 740 places allocated in this quota, nearly 30 percent have opted for the specialty of Family and Community Medicine.

According to Javier PĆ©rez de Rojas, a resident doctor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, 29.32 percent of non-EU applicants have selected Family Medicine, with a total of 217 places assigned. The top three preferences for non-EU MIRs affected by the quota are Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Radiodiagnosis.

In terms of hospitals, Gregorio MaraĆ±Ć³n University Hospital leads the ranking with 25 non-EU candidates in the quota, followed by Vall dā€™Hebron University Hospital and the Multiprofessional Teaching Unit of AFyC Metropolitana Nord. Other popular hospitals include the Barcelona Clinic, La Fe, and La Paz University Hospital.

On the flip side, specialties like Pediatric Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical Biochemistry, and Angiology and Vascular Surgery have only been assigned to one non-EU MIR each. The specialties with at least five assigned places for the non-EU quota include Obstetrics and Gynecology, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Dermatology.

It is worth noting that the initial quota of non-EU applicants without a residence or work permit in Spain had already been exhausted by order number 7,999, indicating a high demand for these positions compared to previous years. While the information in Medical Writing may contain input from healthcare professionals, it is ultimately edited and prepared by journalists. It is advised that any health-related inquiries be discussed with a healthcare provider.
