The ‘Sport and Anatomy’ Center for Rehabilitation Medicine of the University of Pisa is expanding with the Biomechanics laboratory and Sports Medicine, essential disciplines to be able to fully take charge of sportsmen and others. The inauguration of the new premises will be held on Friday 10 June, at 5 pm, with the interventions of the rector Paolo Maria Mancarella, the director of the Marco Gesi Center, the president of the School of Medicine Riccardo Zucchi and the director of the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering. Maria Vittoria Salvetti.

“Developing the planning of the Center – says Professor Marco Gesi – is one of the main objectives that we set ourselves from the beginning of the project. New activities, new figures and new scientific-disciplinary sectors are essential to achieve higher goals in the field of training and research, so as to reach both professionals working in this field and students who are preparing to enter a world increasingly competitive job “.

The ‘Sport and Anatomy’ Center was born in 2018 with the intention of being an open and interdisciplinary laboratory, a real ‘training ground’, for students of the degree courses in Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences, where to see and put into practice many of the topics covered during the lectures. In fact, there are many students from the University of Pisa and other Italian and foreign universities who carry out curricular and extracurricular internships, thesis internships, or who attend it as graduates.

“With the two new disciplines, even more students will be interested in attending the Center to increase their educational background and improve their experiences also in the field of research – underline the University – just to give a few examples, the postgraduates of the School of Medicine of the sport and physical exercise will be able to find a particularly suitable training environment, while engineering students will be able to devote themselves to the study of movement analysis, managing to understand, in synergy with health personnel, the physiological and pathological aspects of the patient / sportsman “.

The Biomechanics laboratory, created in collaboration with the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering, is equipped with very high precision technology and has among its primary interests the analysis of movement through a VICON optoelectronic system, with force platforms and IMU.

Thanks to Sports Medicine, the ‘Sport and Anatomy’ Center becomes part of the ‘headquarters’ structures (like those present at the Pisan University Hospital) in which the specialists in Sports and Exercise Medicine physicists will be able to gain experience in this specialized sector and deepen the different aspects that revolve around a sportsman, from imaging to rehabilitation, from re-athletization to the study of biomechanical dynamics. This will allow them to go beyond certification for physical activity, approaching other specialized skills necessary to become a well-rounded professional in the sector.
