Back to the future with Lego: the DeLorean does it in three

“Marty, you have to go back with me!”
“Back where?”
“Back to the future”

This dialogue, between Doc and Marty McFly, opens in fact the second chapter of Back to the Futurereleased in theaters in 1989. The scene played by the two protagonists of the saga, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox, would not have been as epic without the car behind them: a DeLorean MC-12 transformed into a time machine.

I’m a fan of Back to the Future they had met it in 1985. Four years later they find it changed: it can fly and its fuel is pure garbage. Moments after the invitation to follow him into the future, Doc even takes a banana peel and introduces it into the Mr. Fusion device that converts waste into energy.

The DeLorean, the Mr. Fusion device, the banana: everything we mentioned in remembering one of the symbolic scenes of the trilogy directed by Robert Zemeckis, is contained in the new Lego set “Time Machine – Back to the Future”, out on 1 April 2022 (and no, it is not a fish). There are also the minifigures of the two protagonists, but the relationship between their size – they are as high as the wheels of the car – and that of the car is a declaration of intent: we are faced with the classic piece to be exhibited at home and above all to be admired. In short, it is not something that is left in the hands of a child.

Admire, we said. One cannot do otherwise in the face of the richness of details of the set consisting of 1872 pieces, on sale at a cost that is not exactly for all budgets: 170 euros on the Lego store. Forget the DeLorean replica of the Lego Cuusoo set (the platform that preceded the birth of Lego Ideas) from 2013, with the square hood, without windshield and above all without the futuristic gull-wing doors. The 2022 model car is extraordinarily faithful to the futuristic car seen on the big screen.

Let’s start with the exteriors: The large windshield was specially designed by Lego for this car. The hood of the car, as well as the doors, are fully functional and lift up to reveal the trunk, which is located in the front of the car: there is room to store inside the replica of Marty McFly’s hoverboard and a crate with plutonium bars (which in the film are used to power the first version of the car, from 1985), two objects contained in the set.

We were talking about doors that can be lifted, but be careful because there is no mechanism that blocks them at the top. A small flaw when you consider that the car’s ‘wingspan’ contributed to making it iconic and it is perhaps with the doors open, so as to be able to observe the interior, that many would have preferred to exhibit the toy car.

The interiors, in fact: the interior, thanks to a series of stickers, is very similar to that of the DeLorean used for the trilogy. There are three seven-segment colored displays on the dashboard, where the iconic date “October 26, 1985” is indicated. And there is, above all, a spectacular flow channel between the two seatswhich you can light up if you want (a real gem if you think that the luminous pieces, in the Lego sets, are not so frequent).

The most interesting aspect of the new Lego set dedicated to Back to the Future is that it is basically a 3-in-1 product. With the same bricks, in fact, you can modify the car to make it resemble, from time to time, the protagonist of the chapters that make up the trilogy.

And therefore you can choose the classic DeLorean with the long hook on the roof of the first film (1985), or the 1989 flying DeLorean, with the tires that rotate 90 ° thanks to a special lever under the model, or finally the 1990 DeLorean, with the addition of some details on the bonnet and the red wheel rims. We remember that each set contains enough bricks for just one of these cars.

“Doc you have to take more run-up. We don’t have enough road to reach 88 “
“Streets? Where we are going there is no need for roads “
