Beer, is drinking (a little) good for you? We asked the astronaut doctor Filippo Ongaro Cook
1 / 7 : Is beer good for consumption in moderation?

A recent study carried out by some researchers of theUniversity of Murcia, Spainargues that “IModerate beer consumption is associated with good physical and mental healthas well as increased social support. Researchers have also highlighted some health benefits directly related to moderate consumption of beer (come anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and even anticancer effects). «You always need to pay attention to the methodology with which a study is carried out. In this case, the authors themselves acknowledge the impossibility of establishing a cause-effect relationship between beer consumption and health since it is an observational study» explains Dr. Filippo Ongaro, famous for being the astronauts’ doctor (from 2000 to 2007) and recognized as one of the European forerunners of anti-aging and functional medicine, founder and coordinator of the first anti-aging medicine center in Italy. “These studies should be confirmed or denied through an actual experimental study which, however, should last long enough to see any results,” adds the expert, who has worked for several years on the psycho-physical health of astronauts. Ongaro’s mission was not space but still aimed at space, given that the purpose of his work at the European Space Agency (ESA) was to slow down the aging process to which astronauts are exposed with long stays in orbit . Six months in orbit ages the equivalent of ten years on Earth. For this reason, Dr. Filippo Ongaro – as the astronauts’ doctor – had to implement a scientific program of ‘countermeasures’ capable of blocking this process, allowing the astronauts to return home fit after even very long missions. We asked Ongaro if he ever included beer in astronauts’ diets in orbit (or on the ground, in preparation for departure as well as upon return). “Alcohol is forbidden on the space station,” he told us. “But I happened to drink beer with the astronauts on the ground several times,” he added. Let’s see, point by point, the effects that beer can have on the body.
