The toll is four dead and one missing collapse on construction site of a supermarket in Florence. The firefighters, who worked among the rubble all night, recovered the body of the fourth worker, while the search for the fifth continues. The Pope expresses his condolences and asks for “more safety in the workplace”. The investigators are investigating the regularity of the residence permits: it is probable that some victims were not in order. Schlein opens up to the government: “Let’s work together on safety at work”.

The accident was caused by
failure of a beam which caused a chain collapse of the attics: eight people were killed among the workers engaged in the construction of a supermarket. Among the victims is a 59-year-old Italian, Luigi Coclite, originally from Teramo and resident in Collesalvetti (Livorno); the others are of North African origin. The three injured are all originally from Romania. In Florence the
citizen mourning with a minute’s silence at 3pm. The other victims are
Mohamed Toukabri54 years old,
Taoufik Haidar43 years old, both of Tunisian origin,
Mohamed El Ferhane, 24 year old Moroccan. Missing
Bouzekri Rahimialso Moroccan, 56 years old.

After the accident the Prosecutor’s Office has
opened a file, currently without suspects, for negligent collapse and multiple manslaughter, and the construction site ended up under seizure. And in the meantime it emerges that
the client company and the contractor company of the works are the
themselves of an accident that occurred on the construction site of another supermarket in Genoa on 10 February 2023. On that occasion three workers were injured when a parking ramp collapsed. Three months later,
on the same construction site, another episode: a gate fell and hit another worker, seriously injuring him.

CGIL and UIL have
declared a two-hour nationwide strike for Wednesday 21 February. The CISL has instead announced a national mobilization against deaths and accidents at work, with assemblies in factories, construction sites, offices and production sites and initiatives across the territories, from North to South. For Maurizio Landini, general secretary of the CGIL , “that of Florence is
an unacceptable tragedy which is repeated within the logic of subcontracting and lowest-cost contracts, which must be opposed at a national level”.

Schlein opens up to the government: “Let’s work together for security” The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein launches an appeal to the government, clarifying that she is “very determined to bring the issue” of workplace safety “back to the attention of the executive, which has the tools to deal with it”. In this particularly dramatic moment, Pope Francis wishes to renew the appeal for safety in the workplace, hoping for greater commitment from those who have the responsibility to protect workers and, while he thanks all those who are working in the rescue operations, he assures his fatherly prayers and sends everyone his apostolic blessing as a sign of spiritual closeness”.

The contractor: a huge tragedy “A huge tragedy, we are overwhelmed with amazement and condolence”, reads a note from the managers of Pavese Building Activities (Aep), the company contracting the work on the construction site. “It is a moment of silence and pain – continues the note -. We are at the complete disposal of the authorities to ensure all the conditions necessary to clarify this dramatic accident”.
