The Stroke Unit of the Brotzu of Cagliari turns 20 and celebrates with an important recognition.
On 11 September 2001, in fact, the first structure dedicated to stroke in the region was inaugurated in the largest hospital in Sardinia, a reality that over the years has become a regional reference.
It is a specialized unit, active 24 hours a day, with medical and nursing staff exclusively dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Italy after cardiovascular disease and cancer, and is considered a time-dependent disease; the salvation of the affected person in fact depends on the speed with which the symptoms are recognized and the timeliness of the treatments, pharmacological and interventional, practiced on the patient.
In twenty years of activity, the Brotzu Stroke Unit has seen about 12 thousand patients, often in very serious conditions, for many of whom it was possible to intervene by reducing the consequences of the stroke and allowing them to resume normal life.
The structure, belonging to the Neurology department and directed by Maurizio Melis, thanks to the constant assistance activity, celebrates its twentieth anniversary with an important recognition: for the second consecutive year it received the Angels Awards Gold from ESO (European Stroke Organization) and by the international organization Angels, thus confirming its position as one of the best international stroke centers.
The care of people affected by stroke is entrusted not only to high-tech tools but to the fundamental collaboration between all health professionals involved. Doctors (neurologists, radiologists, interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, cardiologists), nurses and OSS committed every day to a single mission: to save the patient and give him back a normal life.
