Cancer vaccine reduces liver tumors in small study.

For the study, researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine used samples taken from patients’ tumors to build vaccines based on neoantigens, new mutations found only on a single patient’s tumor. The goal was to train the immune system to attack and kill only these unique proteins, leaving healthy tissue unscathed.

A third of patients with advanced liver cancer had their tumors shrink after receiving a customized vaccine developed by Geneos Therapeutics along with an immunotherapy drug.

The studied vaccine trains the immune system to recognize ignored antigens, demonstrating superior efficacy compared to immunotherapy alone in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

The result was about double the response typically seen with immunotherapy alone, the researchers said. Further studies are planned to confirm these promising results.

The preliminary study was presented at the American Association for Cancer Research in San Diego and published in “Nature Medicine“.
