Loud, happy, colorful – this is how jokers and fools celebrate the fifth season. Make-up is essential. If you use them carefully, you will avoid unpleasant consequences.
Make-up sets are usually safe
First the good news for everyone who likes it colorful: Make-up sets that are sold for Carnival or Halloween are usually safe. This is what studies by monitoring authorities from earlier years show.
Less good: In some cases they contained banned dyes. Increased levels of heavy metals or preservatives can also be a problem. The ingredients must be stated on make-up products – but the lists often do not help to identify problematic substances.
Take warnings seriously
What to do? Despite all the fun, jesters and fools should take printed warnings seriously: For example, do not use the products around the eyes, even if the packaging shows the area around the eyes with make-up. Because there are dyes that are not permitted for the sensitive eye area according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation.
Tipp: Avoid the eye area, lips and injured skin areas – especially for children. They allow any harmful substances contained in them to enter the body more easily. Glitter can also easily catch the eye.
Colors are based on water or fat
There are two types of makeup: water-based and fat-based paints. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Watercolors can be apply easily and remove again, but are also considered less stable on the skin. Grease-based paints are often farbintensiv and haltbarerbut also more difficult to remove make-up.
Pay attention to cleanliness and durability
True works of art can be applied to the skin with brushes and sponges. These tools must be clean before they are used. This also applies to the hands. Otherwise they can easily transmit germs. It’s worth noting the date on new products – a picture of an opened jar combined with a number often shows how many months the make-up will last after opening.
Tipp: Products that have already been opened from the previous carnival season can definitely be used again. Exceptions: Anything that smells rancid, flocculates or breaks down into its components belongs in the trash.
Thoroughly remove make-up before going to bed
Immediately fall into bed exhausted after the party? That sounds tempting, but it’s not a good idea. In order to protect the skin, the make-up must be removed first. Watercolors can usually be rinsed off with warm water and soap or a mild washing lotion. Fat-based colors can be removed with make-up removal lotion and pads or fat cream.
Tipp: If you carefully apply cream to your skin before applying make-up, it will be easier to remove make-up later. For fat-based colors, choose a rich cream, let it absorb well into the skin and only then paint.
