Collaborative, innovative, tailor-made: this is the healthcare of the future according to Italians

Healthcare will never be the same after Covid. If the patients, who have experienced the strengths and weaknesses of the national health service, hope so, the institutions that have redesigned the health of the future in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr). But how would Italians like to be treated? Censis asked a representative sample of citizens and the results, presented today at the first edition of “The Italian Health Day” by Janssen Italia, go in the direction of “RInnovAzione”, a neologism born from the meeting of Research, Innovation, Action and Renew, words that recall the dynamics that Italians consider decisive for building Healthcare that maximizes health value. “The Italians, grateful to health care for what it has done in an emergency, now look at it projected towards the future. Personalization of care, higher outcomes, better quality of life and economic sustainability are the variables of a difficult equation which, if the role of innovators, from researchers to drug companies so much appreciated by citizens, is properly valued, will undoubtedly be resolved. . It is no coincidence that the majority of Italians are convinced that in the next few years, also thanks to the lessons of this two-year period, the health service is destined to improve ”, said Massimiliano Valerii, Director General of Censis. The research was carried out as part of the “Construction Sites for the Healthcare of the Future” project, launched in 2021 by Censis and Janssen Italia, the pharmaceutical company of the Johnson & Johnson Group to identify the development guidelines for post-Covid Healthcare.

Citizens highlighted the key role of innovation, which is decisive for improving care, care pathways and defenses against new emergencies: over 9 out of 10 respondents trust scientific researchers and believe that public spending on health represents an investment and not a cost. The cooperation between states and pharmaceutical companies is fundamental for the efficacy of scientific experimentation and for the efficiency of access to treatment, which enjoy the trust of as many as 2 out of 3 Italians. Scientific studies in fact generate new knowledge – and Janssen Italy in a few years (from 2017 to 2020) has tripled the trials in our country -, they allow free access to new therapies for patients and therefore save the health system: for every euro invested in research and development by companies, in fact, 2.8 savings are generated for public health, as demonstrated by a study conducted by the High School of Economics and Management of Health Systems (ALTEMS).

“The Report presented today clearly shows what Italians expect from post-Covid healthcare and we can only agree with what they have expressed, starting with the request for greater public-private collaboration to bring innovation to patients. We are also pleased to note that Italians place a high degree of trust in pharmaceutical companies and that their role is recognized in the field of innovation, both in emergencies and in ordinary situations. Clinical research represents, in fact, the lifeblood of our company, just think that there are 14 new molecules on which Janssen is working, especially in the oncology and immunological fields, so that they are available to patients “, said Massimo Scaccabarozzi. , President of Janssen Italia and Head of External Affairs Johnson & Johnson Italia.

The Censis research also speaks to us of the desire of citizens to play an active role in the care of their health, starting with the relationship with the doctor, in which 9 out of 10 Italians place their trust. The percentage of those who trust in the health service of their region is also very high (73.2%). Confidence that projects forward: 61% of Italians are convinced that in the coming years, thanks to the lessons learned from the pandemic, our health will improve. To really do this, however, it will be essential to build care around the patient: 94.3% of respondents hoped for greater personalization of care, with 92.9% expecting care pathways, from home, to the local area and to hospitals. , are tailored to the personal needs of the patient. In this direction, for example, the “Janssen a Casa Tua” drug domiciliation service, activated since the beginning of the pandemic, goes in this direction, which allows patients to save precious time, improving their quality of life.

The Regional Healthcare Model Organization Manager of AGENAS (National Agency for Regional Health Services) participated in the debate following the presentation of the Censis data. Alice Borghinithe General Secretary of Cittadinanzattiva Anna Lisa Mandorino, Daiana TaddeoNational Research Area SIMG (Italian Society of General Medicine and Primary Care), the General Director of Censis Massimiliano Valerii and the President of Janssen Italy and Head of External Affairs Johnson & Johnson Italy Massimo Scaccabarozzi.
