Consumers Demand More Information on Animal Welfare and Food Production Practices

Consumers in Spain feel that they lack information regarding animal welfare, according to a European survey conducted by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) in various countries. The survey found that 7 out of 10 Spaniards consider the welfare of farm animals to be very important, although 42% are hesitant to pay more for food with higher welfare standards.

The study also revealed that 97% of Spaniards consume meat or fish, with 39% eating meat at least 5 days a week and 17% consuming it daily. The concept of animal welfare was defined by consumers as ensuring that animals are born, grow, and live in good conditions.

While a significant portion of respondents (58%) are willing to pay more for food produced with better welfare standards, 42% are not prepared to do so. In the event that meat prices increase, consumers indicated that they would seek alternatives such as buying cheaper meats, choosing less expensive cuts, consuming more legumes or vegetable-based substitutes, or reducing their meat intake.

Furthermore, the survey highlighted that consumers feel poorly informed about the conditions of animals raised for human consumption, with labeling and packaging being the primary sources of information. Consumers also expressed a desire for stricter laws to guarantee animal welfare, equal welfare standards for imported animal products, and EU funding to support producers in implementing higher welfare standards.

Overall, the survey emphasizes the importance of transparency and consumer education regarding animal welfare standards in food production.
