New Variant, KP.2, Sparks Alert in the USA
Rome, 4 May 2024 – The United States is on high alert due to the circulation of a new variant of Covid-19, known as KP.2. This variant is the daughter of the now well-known JN.1 variant, but with some concerning differences. The new KP.2 variant is currently responsible for 1 in 4 infections, and it has characteristics that require close attention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One of the most worrying aspects of the KP.2 variant is that it seems to have a mutation in the Spike protein, which the SarsCoV2 virus uses to attach to cells. Even more alarming is the fact that it may not respond to updated versions of vaccines. Experts fear that the USA may experience a new wave of Covid-19 cases in the upcoming summer.
Dr. Thomas A. Russo, from the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Buffalo, expressed concerns about the waning immunity in the population, which increases vulnerability to new infections. He predicts a new wave or an increase in cases and hospitalizations in the summer due to the new mutation.
A study conducted at Harvard, yet to be published, shows that the latest vaccines may not provide protection against the KP.2 variant. Additionally, the new variant appears to be more resistant to immunity acquired from previous infections.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the KP.2 variant is now responsible for 24.9% of infections, surpassing the JN.1 variant. The rapid spread of the KP.2 variant has already reached 20% in the UK, suggesting that it may become predominant globally.
Virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco from the State University of Milan suggests that the solution to the evolving Covid-19 virus may be to develop a new vaccine every year, similar to the approach taken for the flu vaccine. The variability of the virus and its ability to develop new variants within a short period highlight the need for a flexible vaccination strategy.
It is clear that the battle against Covid-19 is far from over, and vigilance and adaptability will be crucial in combating new variants like KP.2.
