New Study Shows Fasting Must Last at Least Three Days for Health Benefits

A recent study conducted by researchers from the Charité University Hospital in Berlin and Queen Mary University of London has shed new light on the effectiveness of fasting for health benefits. The research, published in Nature Metabolism, reveals that fasting must be practiced for a minimum of three days to have a significant impact on the body.

The study followed 12 healthy volunteers who participated in a seven-day water-only fasting regime. Throughout the fasting period, the volunteers were closely monitored to record changes in the levels of around 3,000 proteins in their blood before, during, and after fasting.

The results showed that after two to three days of fasting, the body switches its energy source from glucose to stored fats, resulting in weight loss. The volunteers lost an average of 5.7 kilograms over the seven-day period, with the majority of the weight loss coming from fat mass rather than muscle mass. However, lean mass was quickly regained after the fasting period ended.

While the study confirms the potential benefits of fasting for weight loss, it also raises doubts about the effectiveness of popular intermittent fasting methods that involve shorter periods of calorie restriction. The researchers emphasized that the benefits of fasting were only observed after three days of total calorie restriction, longer than previously believed.

Nutritionist Pietro Mignano, who was not involved in the study, explained the importance of practicing fasting under the guidance of a specialist. He cautioned against following fasting trends without proper medical supervision, as fasting can have both short-term and long-term side effects if not done correctly. Improper fasting can lead to fatigue, drops in blood pressure, dizziness, and even psychological issues related to food disorders.
