E-cigarettes increase the risk of heart failure, according to a new study

A recent study conducted by a US research team has found a concerning association between the use of e-cigarettes and the risk of heart failure. The study, led by scientists from MedStar Health in Baltimore, analyzed data from over 175,000 participants and found that those who used e-cigarettes were 19 percent more likely to develop heart failure compared to those who did not use them.

Specifically, the study found a statistical association with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HfpEF), a condition in which the heart muscle becomes stiff and does not adequately fill with blood between contractions. However, no statistical association was found with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HfrEF) or systolic heart failure.

This new research adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests e-cigarettes may not be as safe as previously believed. The World Health Organization has already classified vaping devices as harmful products, and recent studies have linked e-cigarettes to nose cancer and other health conditions.

While this study was observational and more research is needed to confirm the findings, the study’s lead researcher, Professor Yakubu Bene-Alhasan, emphasized the importance of considering the health consequences of e-cigarette use, especially with regards to heart health. The results of the study were presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.

As the debate over the safety of e-cigarettes continues, it is clear that more research is needed to fully understand the potential risks associated with their use. In the meantime, experts caution against the use of e-cigarettes and urge individuals to prioritize their heart health by avoiding potentially harmful substances.
