EVO oil every day? Science confirms the benefits under one condition

A recent study conducted at the University of Tor Vergata has provided further evidence of the health benefits of incorporating extra virgin olive (EVO) oil into daily diets. The Mediterranean diet, which includes EVO oil as a primary component, has long been hailed for its ability to prevent various chronic-degenerative diseases and promote longevity.

The study, conducted in vitro, found that daily consumption of EVO oil as the main condiment can reduce cardiovascular risk, improve glucose and lipid metabolism, and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress associated with aging. Additionally, the study revealed potential anti-tumor effects of minor polar compounds found in EVO oil.

Following the in vitro study, a second study was initiated at the University of Tor Vergata, enrolling 16 patients suffering from metabolic syndrome. The patients were given a personalized Mediterranean diet along with a supplement containing minor polar compounds derived from EVO oil. Preliminary results from the study have shown encouraging effects, including reductions in cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammatory indices, body weight, and body mass.

It is important to note that the health benefits observed were a result of consuming high-quality EVO oil. According to Professor Annalisa Noce, the oil should contain at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 grams. This highlights the importance of selecting high-quality EVO oil to reap the full benefits of its consumption.

The findings of this study add to the existing evidence supporting the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet and the role of EVO oil in promoting overall well-being. As research in this area continues, it is hoped that these findings will further underscore the importance of incorporating high-quality EVO oil into daily dietary habits.
