The first year of the new degree course in “Medicine and Surgery” in Bolzano is set to begin this autumn, with 60 places available for students. The course, a collaboration between the Province, the Claudiana University Center, and the Alto Adige Health Authority, will see 50 spots allotted for students with EU qualifications and 10 for those with non-EU qualifications. The entrance test, to be held on May 18th, will be conducted in English and managed by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

A total of 441 registrations were received for the entrance exam, with 321 students from EU countries competing for the 50 EU quota spots and 120 non-EU students vying for the remaining 10 spots. The response to the course has been positive, with over a thousand prospective students beginning the registration process and 441 finalizing it.

The entrance exam will take place in a computer-based format at various test centers in Italy and abroad, with 65 multiple choice questions to be answered in 65 minutes. The data may still undergo minor changes following the necessary checks on requirements. The provincial councilor for Health Prevention and Health, Hubert Messner, is hopeful that the presence of a degree course in Medicine will bring positive impacts to the South Tyrolean healthcare system.

The lessons are expected to begin in autumn 2024, pending accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Research, which is projected to conclude in July 2024. The interest in the course signifies a promising future for Bolzano as a hub for medical education and healthcare advancement.
