Feminist Collective and Socialist Youth Organization Denounce Case of Harassment at University of Girona

The feminist collective Les Metzines and the Socialist Youth Organization have publicly denounced a case of harassment to a student by a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Girona (UdG). The events allegedly occurred last June, and the victim reported the episode to the Mossos d’Esquadra. The attack is said to have taken place within a university context and in a UdG building. The victim informed the building’s management at the time, who then summoned her to report it to the police.

The victim, feeling violated, contacted the entities who requested the university to take action. The UdG decided to separate the teacher from the activity that involved the student but did not offer any further support. Both the student and the entities criticized the lack of accompanying support in the case. The student had resorted to university mechanisms for such cases, but was told that filing a police report meant they couldn’t do anything. The professor continued to exercise normally during this time.

In response to the situation, both groups have called for an open meeting this Friday at eleven in the morning at the Campus Centre stands. They believe that while feminism has been institutionalized in universities through symbolic measures, universities and other institutions continue to be complicit in such attacks.

This is not the first case affecting the UdG. In February, the university’s Feminist Platform publicly denounced two cases of sexual harassment by a professor in the master’s degree in Teaching Spanish and Català with Segones Llengües. Another complaint was also made against a medical professor for making obscene comments to students. The entities emphasize the need for responses that question and seek to overcome the material bases on which gender relations occur.
