Francesco Perrone, Director of the Clinical Trials Complex Structure of the Pascale Cancer Institute of Naples, is the new elected President of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM). He will take office in 2023. The XXIII National Congress of the scientific society saw the new 2021/2023 National Executive Council take office, composed of Saverio Cinieri (President), Francesco Perrone (President-elect), Massimo Di Maio (Secretary), Antonio Russo (Treasurer), Ugo De Giorgi, Rossana Berardi, Rita Chiari, Nicola Silvestris, Filippo Pietrantonio, Matteo Lambertini, Marcello Tucci and Giuseppe Curigliano.

Among other things, Francesco Perrone deserves the credit for having made the scientific community aware of the issue of financial toxicity – the first in Europe to do so – which affects cancer patients and for having carried out, together with his team, an in-depth study to properly investigate the extent and impact on patients’ quality of life and recovery prospects.

“The leitmotif of my program – explains Perrone – will be to intervene in the processes of change in the Italian oncology and be at the same time an instrument for governing these transformations, in collaboration with the institutions. I am convinced, in fact, that our scientific society plays a fundamental role in promoting the advancement of knowledge and the exchange of experiences that are indispensable for making the fight against cancer ever more effective. And I also believe that in the next five years AIOM must govern the necessary evolution of clinical experimentation to make it increasingly useful for improving clinical practice “.
