From bees to bacteria, the third safe food campaign is underway – Nutrition

Bee health and the close correlation with crops dependent on pollination, foodborne illnesses caused by raw food-borne bacteria, especially echinococcosis, and contaminants in food products, specifically mercury and methylmercury : these are the central themes to raise Italians’ awareness of food safety, whose World Day is being celebrated today. For the occasion, EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, and the Ministry of Health are launching the third edition of the #EUChooseSafeFood communication campaign.

The goal is, on the one hand, to inform and sensitize citizens to make informed decisions on food choices in everyday life, at every stage of the food chain, and on the other to highlight the fundamental role of science and the directives formulated by EFSA experts , thanks to which the food on our tables is controlled and safe. In 2023 the #EUChooseSafeFood campaign involves 16 EU countries (9 in 2021 and 12 in 2022). “This year’s initiative – notes Alberto Spagnolli, EFSA’s Senior Policy Advisor at an event organized by the Ministry of Health – involves an ever-increasing number of countries and European experts, who have been working alongside us for twenty years in the risk analysis at all stages of the food chain. The intent of this third edition is to make citizens understand how important the work of scientific experts is, to make the food on our tables safe and at the same time to help them develop awareness and a critical sense of the choices they make on a daily basis in terms of food”.
The campaign, which will last until September, is aimed in particular at citizens aged between 25 and 45, women and young parents, using simple and intuitive language. The it.euchoosesafefood.eu website is available in various languages, from here it is possible to download the #EUChooseSafeFood toolkit which includes images, short videos and content for social media posts.
To actively participate in the safe food campaign, you can share the materials available online; visit the website with practical advice; follow the campaign on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest; use the hashtag #EUChooseSafeFood for communication and promotion activities.
