Before the conversation can begin in a Berlin café, Alev asks Y. ( Full name is known to the editors) the waitress asked if it would be possible to turn down the background music a little. Alev is 26 years old, she is in the middle of studying to become a special needs teacher – and has ADHD. Like many women, she only received the diagnosis while she was studying. Late, maybe too late? After all, in many group sessions she has learned to stand up for her needs, even if it is just to turn down the music that is a bit too loud for her. When too many stimuli come at her at once, Alev finds it difficult to concentrate. “But I only realized that when I was diagnosed with ADHD.”
