Healthcare personnel, 2021 data

The Report on the staff of the Italian healthcare system 2021 integrates the multiple sources of data available on healthcare staff in an organic and structured way, thus enhancing and making the existing information assets accessible to all.

The monograph defines a general framework, as exhaustive as possible, of the personnel working in the healthcare sector with reference not only to the overall amount, but also with respect to the demographic characteristics and territorial peculiarities that distinguish it.

The joint analysis of all available sources allows us to know, for each geographical area, the overall amount and the ratio with respect to the reference population.
Where the information source permitted, a detailed analysis was carried out with respect to chronological age and gender, length of service, type of employment relationship, functional areas, medical specialisation, category and qualification of membership and type of healthcare facility.

The women of the National Health Service

The monograph includes a focus on women in healthcare.
As of December 2021, there are more than 450mila women who work with permanent contracts at National Health Service facilities, i.e. approximately 69% of National Health Service staff

These are some of the 2021 data collected in the monograph Women of the National Health Service.

The growing trend

The trend has been constantly increasing in recent years, since 64% of the year 2010 to 69% of 2021.
Female doctors are also increasingly frequent, going from 38.4 in 2010 to 51.3 in 2021. However, female doctors who have a complex role are still only 19.2%.

However, the percentage of women varies in the different roles in which National Health Service personnel are employed:

healthcare role 69.8% professional role 26.3% technical role 64.2% administrative role 72.6%. From North to South, the presence of women in the NHS varies

Even at a territorial level, the percentage of women varies in the different regional realities. With reference to the total permanent staff, the percentage of women employed by the NHS goes from minimum value of 52.3% recorded for the Campania region, at the maximum value of 76% recorded in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
