Thinking that the term “virtual” derives from the Latin “virtualis”, which in turn originates from “virtus” that is virtue, leads us to feel a kind of incongruity, almost a contradiction. Because virtue is an excellent thing, while we associate, as is right, the word “virtual” with something artificial, constructed and fake. Even the most elaborate and perfect system, able to make us operate as if we were an integral part of that universe, is perceived by us living and thinking, for what in fact it is: an artifice.
