Abruzzo Tops National Flu Cases List

The year 2024 has begun with an unfortunate record for the region of Abruzzo, as it stands out in the national ranking for flu cases in Italy. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, there are currently more than 26 thousand flu patients in the region. The most affected age group is 0 to 4 years, with 2,351 cases, followed by 5 to 14 years with 3,251 cases, and 16 to 64 years with 15,722 cases. Those over 65 years old have 4,822 reported cases.

The first report of the year from the Ministry of Health provides reassuring data for all regions in Italy, with the exception of Abruzzo and Sardinia. The report states that the peak incidence of flu-like syndromes was reached in Italy in the last week of 2023, with a value of 18.3 cases per thousand assisted. However, a decline in the incidence is observed in the first week of 2024 with a rate of 16.5 cases per thousand assisted.

The RespiVirNet epidemiological surveillance, coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is used to monitor and track flu cases. This network utilizes the contribution of general practitioners, pediatricians, local health authorities, and regional reference laboratories for respiratory viruses.

The symptoms of the flu include chills and fever, sore throat, joint and muscle pain, exhaustion, dry cough, burning eyes, headache, and intestinal discomfort. The acute manifestation of the flu is self-limiting and can last for an average of less than a week. However, possible complications such as pneumonia and ear infections can arise, especially in older age groups and those with pre-existing health conditions.

As for treatments, it is recommended to stay hydrated and use symptomatic anti-inflammatory/antifebrile medications to alleviate symptoms. Antibiotics can also be prescribed to those most at risk to prevent bacterial superinfections.

It is important for individuals to seek medical attention if their flu symptoms do not improve or if complications arise. The flu can be particularly dangerous for older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

With the flu season underway, it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus and to seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.
