Injured by a shark in Australia, he is now in Italy for treatment

The young Matteo Mariotti, from Parma, victim of a shark attack in the Pacific Ocean last December 9, has returned to Italy. After being hospitalized in Australia and undergoing three surgeries, he was transferred to the Rizzoli orthopedic institute in Bologna for further treatment and rehabilitation. The return journey lasted about thirty hours, undertaken in a wheelchair with the presence of his father and aunt. At the moment the possibility of further interventions is not excluded, but we will have to wait for more precise information in the coming days. Mariotti, who was in Australia for a work-study experience, was attacked while swimming off the Gold Coast. This incident represents the second shark attack in Queensland in the space of a week last December. Australia, after the United States, is known to have the second highest incidence of shark attacks in the world according to the International Shark Attack File.
