Gemmotherapy Conference Highlights Therapeutic Virtues of Medicinal Plants

Lamezia Terme – The “Gemmotherapy” conference held in the John Paul II room of the Episcopal Seminary of Lamezia was a resounding success, drawing an engaged audience eager to learn about the therapeutic virtues of medicinal plants. The event was organized by Anna Misuraca, president of the Lametina Città Visibili Association.

The conference focused on the important work being done at the Ethnobotanical Conservatories in Italy and Europe, particularly the ones in Sersale and Castelluccio directed by Dr. Carmine Lupia. These conservatories serve as laboratories, research centers, and herbariums dedicated to studying local flora and promoting botany and ethnobotany in relation to human health.

Dr. Lupia, the moderator of the event, introduced a lineup of speakers who delved into various aspects of medicinal plants. Egidio Salamone of the VOS Foundation shared his insights on the Ethnobotanical Conservatory of Castelluccio, while Professor Giancarlo Statti of Unical discussed the role and importance of medicinal plants in chemistry. Dr. Giovanni Canora, a dietitian and Co-Founder of the UNESCO Chair Salerno, concluded the talks by highlighting the magic of Meristemotherapy, which focuses on the therapeutic properties of embryonic plant tissues.

The conference was attended by local authorities, including Mayor Paolo Mascaro, Deputy Domenico Furgiuele, and Regional Councilor Pietro Raso. Raso, who heads the IV Regional Commission for the Environment, expressed strong support for nature conservation efforts, such as the establishment of the Vergari di Mesoraca Reserve Park.

Overall, the conference shed light on the valuable role medicinal plants play in promoting health and well-being, showcasing the importance of continued research and conservation efforts in this field.
