What is Lyme disease: symptoms and course

Lyme borreliosis owes its name to the American town of the same name in which the first case was described in 1975. Lyme disease – explains the ISS – is today the most widespread and relevant vector-transmitted disease with diffusion in temperate and geographical areas. it is second, in number of cases, only to malaria among the diseases that require an arthropod vector for diffusion. The bacterial infection mainly affects the skin, joints, nervous system and internal organs. It can manifest itself with severe, persistent symptoms and, if left untreated, takes on a chronic course. The pathogen, Borrelia, is a genus of bacterium.

The bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu striato is present in Europe and is the only infection agent in North America, while Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are present in Europe, Asia and Africa. These germs are transmitted to humans through the bite of hard ticks of the genus Ixodes and possibly also by Amblyomma and Dermacentor (dog ticks). The main reservoirs of the infection are represented by wild animals (rodents, roe deer, deer, fox, hare).

Clinically, the early symptoms of the disease are intermittent and changing. The disease typically begins in the summer and begins with a slowly expanding red patch. Within a few weeks (which in some cases may become months), early neurological disorders characterized by migrating arthralgia, myalgia, meningitis, polyneuritis, cutaneous lymphocytoma, myocarditis and atrioventricular conduction disorders can develop. Symptoms are fluctuating and can last for months and become chronic.

The last phase of the disease, months or years after infection, is characterized by alterations in the musculoskeletal system (chronic arthritis), in the central and peripheral nervous system (meningitis, encephalomyelitis, cerebellar ataxia, sensory polyneuropathies – disorders, sleep and behavioral disorders), of the skin (chronic atrophic acrodermatitis) and of the cardiovascular system (myopericarditis, cardiomegaly). The disease does not lead to the development of immunity, so the infection can be contracted several times in the course of life.

The stars hit and Victoria Cabello’s revenge

Justin Bieber is not the only one in the entertainment world to have suffered from it: in the United States even stars like the actors had told of the disease Richard Gere, Ben Stiller e Alec Baldwinsinger Avril Lavigne and in Italy Victoria Hair. In particular, the story of the latter – a recent winner of the Beijing Express, a program that by her own admission was almost cathartic to ward off recent suffering – had kept family, friends and obviously fans apprehensive: ” walking, I had both motor and cognitive problems. I had to write everything, I was really run down. On the other hand, I came across disinformation from the scientific community: they said I was depressed, that I had to go back to work. After a year and a half of this ordeal, the doctors of the infectious department of the Sacco were the first to give me a diagnosis, in particular Agostino Zambelli: it was proof that I was not crazy ».
