An important discovery in the field of neuroscience emerges from an Italian study coordinated by Professor Michela Matteoli of Humanitas University. The research reveals a crucial role of brain microglia cells in guiding the development and maturation of memory areas of the hippocampus. Published in ‘Immunity’, the study reveals that these immune cells not only defend the central nervous system, but actively influence the metabolism of neurons involved in memorization.

The microglial Trem2 receptor is at the center of this discovery, and its proper function has been shown to be essential for the healthy development of memory areas in the hippocampus. The lack or malfunction of Trem2 can lead to abnormalities in the energy metabolism of neurons, with potential implications in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

According to Professor Matteoli, “This discovery is exciting not only because it reveals a novel function of microglial cells, but because defects in the metabolism of neurons in this area are involved in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. The fact that mutations in Trem2 constitute a risk factor for the onset of the disease suggests the relevance of this process.”

Although the research is preclinical and limited to experimental models, the authors hope that their work can open new avenues in understanding and treating neurodegenerative diseases. Further studies are needed to delve deeper into the implications of the discovery, but this represents a significant step forward in the context of the complex interaction between immunity and the nervous system.
