Modernizing Nuclear Medicine: Improved Diagnostic Imaging for Comprehensive Patient Care

The Cruces de Osakidetza University Hospital has completed the restructuring and expansion of its Nuclear Medicine Service, achieving a modern facility with cutting-edge diagnostic imaging technology. Over the last five years, the Basque Health Service has invested 8.4 million euros to enhance the diagnostic capabilities and provide comprehensive and personalized care to more than 14,000 patients.

The renovation of the Nuclear Medicine Service has contributed significantly to an increase in diagnostic imaging capacity, leading to more precise and earlier diagnoses for patients. This has resulted in improvements in care offered to patients seeking oncology, pulmonology, and hematology services.

The number of tests and patients treated has seen a significant increase in recent years. In 2023, there were approximately 38,000 tests conducted, compared to 31,000 tests in 2022, with the number of patients treated rising from 13,000 in 2022 to around 14,500 in 2023.

The service has replaced its five diagnostic imaging machines with state-of-the-art equipment. A notable addition includes three new SPECT-CT gamma camera equipment and two new digital PET CT equipment, providing better image quality and reducing irradiation for patients and professionals.

Furthermore, the restructuring and expansion of the service have led to the creation of remodeled spaces such as the Conventional Nuclear Medicine Unit, PET-CT Unit, and office and reporting rooms. New isolation rooms have also been developed, enhancing comfort and emergency medical care during admission in the Metabolic Therapy area.

Overall, these advancements in the Nuclear Medicine Service at the Cruces de Osakidetza University Hospital represent a significant leap forward in diagnostic capabilities and personalized care for thousands of patients.
