Mustard is obtained from the seeds of the mustard plant. The mustard oils it contains have, among other things, anti-inflammatory, cancer-preventing effects and have an antibacterial effect that can promote intestinal health.
Mustard usually consists of mustard seeds, spices and vinegar. There are many different types of mustard on the market: from sweet to extra hot, fine or grainy. You can also make your own mustard from mustard powder. Mustard stimulates the appetite, promotes digestion and makes greasy food more digestible. Mustard is also suitable as a low-fat and aromatic butter substitute, for example on cheese or sausage bread.
Why is mustard so healthy?
The mustard seeds contain, among other things, vitamins, minerals and a high concentration of mustard oil. This essential oil contains valuable secondary plant substances (mustard oil glycosides), which are responsible for the spiciness of mustard. Mustard oils have anti-inflammatory properties and can have positive effects on digestion and intestinal health. In addition, due to its high antioxidant content, mustard can help reduce cell damage and protect the cardiovascular system.
Mustard for colds: Herbal antibiotic
Mustard oils also have antibacterial and antiviral effects. They kill bacteria, fungi and viruses and are therefore also called “herbal antibiotics”. Mustard oils are particularly effective for upper respiratory and urinary tract infections. Unlike classic antibiotics, mustard oils can also overcome the biofilm that some germs use to protect themselves. Highly concentrated mustard oils, which can be used to ward off the onset of a cold, for example, are available in pharmacies without a prescription.
Does mustard oil have an anti-cancer effect?
Direct evidence that mustard helps against cancer has not yet been provided. But Freiburg researchers discovered in a study that mustard oils can protect cells against processes that are crucial for the development of cancer. According to another study, mustard oils may also inhibit the growth of bladder cancer.
How much mustard is healthy?
To benefit from the health benefits of mustard, even small amounts are enough. According to the Freiburg study, particularly hot mustard can have positive effects on health. It is recommended to consume about 20 grams of hot mustard daily, as the cancer-preventing effect is most intense in this due to the high content of mustard oil glycosides. It is important to eat the mustard cold, as heat destroys most of its health-promoting substances. To preserve the mustard oils, mustard should always be stored in the refrigerator and consumed quickly.
