A new outpatient clinic for lipid metabolism disorders – the lipid outpatient clinic – was opened in the Medical Clinic I (cardiology and angiology) of the Giessen University Hospital at the beginning of 2024.

“The special outpatient clinic is an important addition to the range of medical services for the people in this region,” explained the director of Medical Clinic I, Prof. Dr. Samuel Sossalla. He expects patients from a larger catchment area, as there are only a few such centers.

Lipid metabolism disorders, which include, for example, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, have become a significant health problem in today’s society. They represent a decisive risk factor for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and its cardiovascular complications, such as heart attacks and strokes.

“The problem is that disorders in fat metabolism and blood lipids are not noticeable through pain, but are usually only noticed years later through subsequent illnesses such as heart attack, stroke or circulatory problems in the legs. However, the deposits in the arteries caused by the fat metabolism disorders are already present in earlier stages Stages can be recognized and treated before symptoms appear,” says Prof. Dr. Sossalla continues.

The lipid outpatient clinic at Giessen University Hospital was created in response to these challenges and aims to make a sustainable contribution to prevention and treatment through patient-oriented care and advanced research.

With timely diagnosis, through multimodal therapy, the secondary diseases could be prevented and the process of deposits could be slowed down or even stopped. “It is pleasing that the treatment options for lipid metabolism disorders have developed and improved significantly in recent years, so that, depending on the individual risk profile, tailored and personalized therapy can be provided,” said the head of the lipid outpatient clinic, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Pascal Bauer.

The outpatient clinic focuses on differentiated examination and specialized therapy for people with, for example, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels, high lipoprotein (a), genetic diseases of lipid metabolism or complex heart and vascular diseases.

The lipid clinic not only offers diagnostic and therapeutic measures, but also places particular emphasis on providing patients with comprehensive advice. “Our goal is also to enable those affected to actively maintain or improve their own health through targeted information and individual training. Thanks to our many years of expertise in the field of prevention and sports cardiology, we are predestined to to integrate individual lifestyle modifications into the treatment strategy in a personalized manner,” says Priv.-Doz. Dr. Farmer continues.

The lipid outpatient clinic of the Medical Clinic I of the University Hospital Giessen works on the latest medical research. This includes state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, imaging procedures and data analysis that enable precise diagnosis and effective monitoring of therapy.

Appointments in the lipid outpatient clinic can be made by telephone on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on 0641-985-57122 upon recommendation and with a referral from family doctors and/or specialists. The lipid clinic’s office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
