Piedmont Regional Health Councilor Warns of Growing Obesity Epidemic

Luigi Genesio Icardi, the Piedmont regional health councilor, recently spoke at a conference on “Obesity in 2024: new models and treatment goals” in Saluzzo. The event, organized by the Italian Society of Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, aimed to address the rising rates of obesity and the need for effective treatment options.

Icardi highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding obesity, noting that approximately one in seven people now live with this condition. The negative impacts on health, well-being, and overall quality of life are significant, with associated risks and comorbidities leading to a reduction in life expectancy. Furthermore, societal prejudices and stigmas often isolate individuals with obesity, exacerbating the challenges they face.

Of particular concern is the constant growth trend in obesity rates. According to projections from the World Obesity Federation, by 2035, there could be 4 billion people worldwide living with overweight or obesity. This trend is also evident in Europe, where the prevalence of obesity in adults surpasses that of any other region except the Americas, according to the World Health Organization.

To address this crisis, the conference emphasized the importance of a multi-faceted approach to treatment, including the use of anti-obesity pharmacological therapy alongside diet and exercise interventions. Additionally, bariatric surgery is recognized as a vital component of care for obese patients.

Icardi announced plans to establish a specialized center in Cuneo province, through collaboration between the Local Health Authority Cn1 and the Local Health Authority Cn2. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive care for patients seeking bariatric surgery, reducing the need for individuals to travel outside the Piedmont region for treatment.

By combining the expertise of various healthcare professionals, such as surgeons, dieticians, endocrinologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, the center hopes to deliver high-quality care and ensure the safety and effectiveness of treatments for patients with obesity.

As the obesity epidemic continues to grow, initiatives like this one are crucial in addressing the complex challenges presented by this condition and improving outcomes for those affected.
