MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A Pinecrest police officer was injured in a shooting at a shooting range near Homestead Air Reserve Base in south Miami-Dade Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place at the Homestead Training Center, located at 11700 SW 304th St., just before 2:30 p.m., according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dispatch records.
Pinecrest police stated that the officer was shot “during a pre-scheduled training exercise” and was initially taken to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital before being airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center.
Authorities revealed that another officer accidentally shot the injured officer in the forearm. The injured officer was described as stable as of Wednesday afternoon.
Pinecrest Police Department Chief Jason Cohen expressed relief about the officer’s condition, stating, “She is in excellent condition. She will be alright. That is the best news we could have. She is in a good mood. She is surrounded by her family. And she knows we are dealing with it as a family, as one Pinecrest.”
It was disclosed that the injured officer has been with the Pinecrest Police Department for four years.
Cohen also mentioned, “Everyone is a little shaken today. But the good news is that she will be fine. I feel extremely relieved. You never want to hear that one of your officers was shot, but I knew from the beginning that it wasn’t a very serious wound and that she was going to be fine, so which was a great relief.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
