Primary Stories: A Glimpse into the Lives of Health Professionals in Catalan Primary Care Centers

Health professionals from Primary Care centers in Catalonia are taking their day-to-day work to the small screen in a new documentary series called ‘Primary Stories’. The series, which premiered this Thursday, aims to highlight the vital work done by doctors, nurses, social workers, midwives, and pediatricians in Primary Care centers.

The series, consisting of six episodes, provides an inside look at the daily assistance and the relationship between health professionals and patients within the Primary Care network. It is the result of a proposal by the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine (Camfic) in an effort to improve the image and visibility of the specialty in institutional and social spheres.

According to the director of ‘Primary Stories’, Pol Izquierdo, the main goal of the series is to stimulate medical students’ interest in choosing Family and Community Medicine as their specialty. Izquierdo also emphasized the importance of highlighting and making visible the work of Primary Care professionals, who have historically felt undervalued or neglected.

The initiative also aims to increase the prestige of Family and Community Medicine in society and improve the sense of pride among Primary Care professionals. Izquierdo pointed out that despite the efforts being made, Primary doctors have been perceived as less important than those in other specialties. However, the series aims to change this perception by showcasing the vital role that Primary Care professionals play in the lives of their patients.

The documentary series will feature the interaction between healthcare providers and patients, highlighting the trust and emotional connection that exists between them. The series, which consists of six 40-45 minute episodes, was filmed in fifteen Primary Care centers in Catalonia and in some homes of Barcelonès, Bages, and Pallars Sobirà. It is a 3Cat production with the collaboration of Incís Films and the support of the Department of Health.
