Bielefeld – Professor Dr. Marcel Binnebösel accepts the call to become a university professor for general and visceral surgery and is appointed director of the university clinic for general and visceral surgery at the Bielefeld Clinic campus. The certificate of appointment was ceremoniously handed over today by the Rector of Bielefeld University, Professor Dr. Angelika Epple, and the dean of the Medical Faculty, Professor Dr. Claudia Hornberg.

Prof. Dr. Marcel Binnebösel studied medicine in Cologne, Bern and Malmö and also received his doctorate there. The clinical and scientific training took place at the RWTH in Aachen, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. In the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, a designated center of excellence for the surgical treatment of cancer, Binnebösel obtained specialist designations for surgery, visceral surgery and the additional title of special visceral surgery.

Due to outstanding scientific achievements, Binnebösel received his habilitation and was appointed adjunct professor. In 2018, Binnebösel moved to the Bielefeld Mitte Clinic and took over the management of the clinic for general and visceral surgery as chief physician.

At the Bielefeld Clinic, Binnebösel heads one of the largest centers for cancer of the abdominal organs in North Rhine-Westphalia

Thanks to Binnebösel’s extremely high level of commitment and excellent clinical care, he was quickly certified as a visceral oncology center. This is headed by Binnebösel and is therefore responsible for one of the largest centers of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to the certified centers for colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer and esophageal cancer, Binnebösel also heads the Center for Endocrine Surgery, one of only a few centers in Germany certified by the German Cancer Society and the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery.

Binnebösel is committed to the continuous development of cancer medicine at the Bielefeld Clinic, is designated as a senior intestinal surgeon by the German Cancer Society, is deputy medical director and a member of the visceral surgery section of the Academy for Advanced Medical Training of the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association and the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. Binnebösel’s scientific focus is on the prediction and prognosis of endocrine and visceral oncological diseases and is to be established and expanded on the Bielefeld Clinic campus through networking with working groups at Bielefeld University.
