Dr. Dr. comments on the new food-related recommendations of the German Nutrition Society (DGE). Carola Reimann, Chairwoman of the AOK Federal Association, said:

“Climate and health are closely linked. The fact that this awareness is becoming more and more popular among the population is now reflected in various studies and surveys, according to which many people would like to eat healthier and at the same time more sustainably. It is to be welcomed that The German Nutrition Society has revised its food-related nutritional recommendations with exactly this approach. We need to know the benchmark for which diet respects planetary boundaries and is also beneficial to health. In order to achieve the new recommendations, we would have to reduce meat consumption by almost two on average Reducing the consumption by a third, increasing the consumption of nuts, legumes and whole grain products and doubling the consumption of vegetables and fruit is hardly feasible for most people in the existing nutritional environment.

To ensure that these ambitious recommendations do not result in people dropping out, concrete solutions should be identified. Behavioral research in recent years shows that we need to design food environments in such a way that making healthy and sustainable choices is easier. That is the key to success. If we create fair environments, the nutritional transition can succeed. In concrete terms, this means: The climate-friendly and healthy choice should be visible at a glance on the front of the packaging in the supermarket, be relatively cheaper and become the minimum standard in daycare centers and schools. Through an evidence-based mix of instruments, we can support consumers in achieving the ideal recommendations.”
