The historic Angelo Mai complex in Rome set to undergo transformation into a new gym and green space

The Angelo Mai complex in Rome, known for its rich history dating back to the 16th century, is about to undergo a major transformation. The complex, which served as a school until 2002, was subsequently abandoned and taken over by homeless people, eventually becoming a social center for artistic and cultural activities.

In 2022, the Municipality of Rome announced a design competition for the redevelopment of the garden located at the intersection of Via degli Zingari and Via Clementina, with the construction of a gym connected to a school as one of the key objectives.

After a lengthy bureaucratic process, the team of Aesse Studio, along with architects Augustus and Philip D’Aquinas, engineers Sergio De Felice and Vincenzo Esposito, agronomist Luciano Mauro, and designer Donatella Pingitore, was declared the winner of the competition.

The winning proposal envisions transforming the garden into a modern green space inspired by the medieval concept of the Hortus Conclusus. The design includes lush vegetation, fruit trees, and a body of water on the north side, creating a tranquil oasis in the bustling Monti district.

Additionally, a new gym building will be constructed from scratch, replacing an existing structure, and will include a climbing wall, changing rooms, and a small sports field on the roof. The building’s exterior will be clad in colored cement slabs to blend in with the surrounding historical buildings.

The project aims to create a space for both school students and neighborhood residents to enjoy, further enhancing the urban green corridor between Via Clementina and Via S. Giuseppe Labre.

With construction set to begin soon, the Angelo Mai complex is poised to be revitalized into a vibrant hub of social and recreational activities in the heart of Rome.
