Every sport has its own risk of injury – this is how sports physiotherapy can help
BUHL. Injuries and the consequences of overloading do not only occur in competitive sports. Accidents, falls, poor equipment or incorrect training also have undesirable consequences in leisure and popular sports. Then competent practitioners are required.
What role does sports physiotherapy play after sports injuries?
What role does sports physiotherapy play after sports injuries? “A pretty important one,” says Andreas Macau, owner and managing director of Athletico in Bühl. “Together with the treating sports doctors, we monitor and promote the healing process. And it is also very important to start building up your performance early on so that you can continue training.” Sports physiotherapists have a permanent place in treatment and rehabilitation. In addition to their basic physiotherapeutic training, they have special knowledge of training theory and the biomechanics of various sports. This enables individual therapy and training planning so that sports physiotherapy is tailored to the needs of the athletes.
Typical sports injuries – do they exist?
“Each sport places its own demands on the body. And unfortunately there are also typical overload and injury mechanisms that require sports medicine treatment,” explains Andreas Macau. The tendinitis that occurs in the elbow when playing golf or tennis, or cruciate ligament or meniscus injuries in ball sports are well known. “The tendons of the so-called rotator cuff, a muscle group that stabilizes the shoulder joint, or the ligaments in the ankle are also frequently affected.” and his team at Athletico Bühl have to deal with sports physiotherapy.

Are there also sports in which you get injured less often than in others? “Naturally. Relatively harmless in terms of injuries, for example, are swimming, rowing, fitness training or dancing,” confirms Macau. Soccer and handball, on the other hand, account for more than half of all registered sports injuries, as summarized by the Safety in Sports Foundation. The ankle joint (18 percent), the head and the hand (both 13 percent) are particularly affected, followed by the lower leg (12 percent) “Sports physiotherapy is of course also about optimizing movement sequences and improving muscle coordination, to reduce the risk of injury. In this respect, every sports rehabilitation is also a bit of injury prevention,” says Andreas Macau.
