Italy Implements Measures to Prevent Dengue Virus Spread

By Marzio Bartoloni

As the cases of Dengue virus continue to rise globally, particularly in countries like Brazil, Italy has taken proactive measures to prevent the introduction of the disease into the country. The Ministry of Health has released a circular outlining health surveillance measures against the Dengue virus, focusing on preventing the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the main vector for the disease, from being introduced into Italy.

Currently, Italy has not recorded any “native” cases of Dengue in 2024, with all cases being imported from abroad. The new circular includes measures such as controlling and disinfecting aircraft, as well as inspecting goods arriving from countries at risk. However, random testing for passengers, which had been previously discussed, has not been implemented yet.

The circular specifies that surveillance measures apply to means of transport and goods coming from countries where the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present or where the risk of contracting Dengue is frequent. Aircraft coming from at-risk countries must possess a residual disinfection certificate, while goods that may pose a risk for importing infected mosquitoes must be accompanied by certifications attesting to disinfestation.

Francesco Vaia, director of the General Directorate of Prevention of the Ministry of Health, reassured the public that there is no Dengue alarm in Italy. However, measures are being taken to prevent the introduction of the disease and Usmaf operators are ensuring that prophylactic actions are implemented in ports and airports.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, authorities are considering the introduction of rapid ‘do-it-yourself’ tests for Dengue diagnosis. The National Health Surveillance Agency is in talks with the Ministry of Health to allow the use of these tests, which could provide quicker diagnosis of the disease.

As the world grapples with the spread of Dengue virus, Italy’s proactive measures aim to protect the population from the potentially deadly disease. The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation closely and implement necessary measures to prevent the spread of Dengue in the country.
