The Suffolk County Health Department’s Office of Minority Health is launching a new program called “Styled Wellness” which aims to promote good health in communities of color during Minority Health Month in April. The program will bring free medical exams to hair salons in the region, starting with Imperial Kutt Kreators in Bellport and Paramount Styles in Dix Hills.
This initiative is an extension of the SHOPs program, which has been educating customers about health issues in minority communities for over two decades through partnerships with barbershops. With the help of Stony Brook Medicine, nursing and physician assistant students will offer free blood pressure screenings and health education to salon clients.
High blood pressure is a major concern in African American and Latino communities, and early detection is crucial in preventing serious complications. The goal of the “Styled Wellness” program is to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood pressure checks and provide education on maintaining healthy levels to prevent heart disease and stroke.
Dr. Gregson Pigott, Suffolk County Health Commissioner, emphasized the importance of proactive health measures in communities of color and the potential for lasting impacts on health outcomes. The health department highlighted the disparities in health outcomes experienced by racial and ethnic minority populations, attributing them to longstanding inequalities.
Adesuwa Watson, director of the Suffolk County Office of Minority Health, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Stony Brook Medicine and the opportunity to reach more businesses and customers with screening and information. The community is encouraged to participate in the “Styled Wellness” events, with upcoming sessions scheduled at Sir Shave Barber Parlor in Wyandanch and House of Essence in Amityville.
