What is dengue fever
As reported by the Higher Institute of Health, dengue is of viral origin, caused by four very similar viruses (Den-1, Den-2, Den-3 and Den-4) and transmitted to humans by mosquito bites which, in turn, they stung an infected person. There is therefore no direct contagion between human beings. The virus circulates in the blood of the infected person for 2 to 7 days.
In the western hemisphere the main vector is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, but there are also cases transmitted by Aedes albopictus. Dengue has been known for over two centuries, especially present during and after the rainy season in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, Southeast Asia and China, India, the Middle East, Latin and Central America, Australia and the Pacific.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Normally the disease gives rise to fever within a few days of the mosquito bite, with temperatures even very high. Fever may be accompanied by acute headaches, eye pain, muscle and joint pain, nausea and vomiting, skin irritation. Typical symptoms are often absent in children.
