Swine flu, second death in a few hours in Vicenza. The ASL: “Get vaccinated”

VICENZA – A 47-year-old man died in Vicenza due to the H1N1 type A virus, responsible for the so-called swine flu. The death occurred on January 8 at the San Bortolo hospital, where the man had been hospitalized for days in serious conditions in the intensive care unit.

The second death

This is the second death which occurred in a few hours in the same hospital, after a 55-year-old man, already suffering from serious pathologies, lost his life on 7 January. Neither victim was vaccinated.

At the moment, four other patients are hospitalized in the Vicenza hospital for interstitial pneumonia caused by the virus, a pathology that causes a serious form of respiratory failure. Among them, a woman would be in critical condition.

Symptoms are rhinorrhea (runny nose), pharyngitis, cough, fever, malaise and asthenia. In more serious cases, breathing difficulties may also arise, a warning sign that the flu has affected the lungs.

Three others hospitalized in Ogliastra

Also at the Lanusei hospital in Ogliastra, Sardinia, two people are in intensive care and three others have required hospitalization: they are in the medical department. The Local Health Authority has assured that there is no alarm over the flu cases recorded in Ogliastra in recent days, but has invited the population to remain alert and recommended vaccination to prevent contagion, as well as good hygiene respiratory system and regular hand washing.

The importance of prevention

“Once again, healthcare reminds us how important prevention is, how important our behaviors and habits are: nevertheless, we are shocked by the premature death of a 47-year-old fellow citizen affected by swine flu. I offer my heartfelt thanks condolences and my closeness to his family” he commented Roberto Ciambettipresident of the Regional Council on the death which occurred in Vicenza.
