Rome, 29 April 2024 – Renowned Italian journalist Franco Di Mare bravely revealed on Sunday that he is battling a terminal illness, specifically mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos particles. The 68-year-old, well-known for his work as a correspondent and former director of Rai Tre, shared his diagnosis in connection with a transmission on Fabio Fazio’s show, “What’s the weather like.”

In a touching moment on the show, Di Mare spoke candidly about his illness, attributing it to exposure to asbestos during his time in war zones. Despite the grim prognosis associated with mesothelioma, Di Mare maintained a sense of hope and resilience, emphasizing the importance of scientific advancements in cancer treatment.

Di Mare’s revelation prompted an outpouring of support and admiration from viewers and colleagues, with Fazio presenting the journalist’s upcoming book, “The words to say it. The war outside and inside us,” which sheds light on his personal journey with the disease.

However, amidst the emotional disclosure, Di Mare also expressed frustration with Rai, stating that he felt abandoned by the public television network in his time of need. He highlighted the lack of support and communication from Rai’s management, labeling their behavior as “repugnant.”

Legal experts, such as Elisabetta Iannelli of Aimac, emphasized the employer’s responsibility to facilitate investigations into the causes of occupational-related illnesses like mesothelioma. Iannelli stressed that employers cannot obstruct employees seeking to ascertain the source of their illnesses, particularly in cases where asbestos exposure is a known risk factor.

Despite the challenges Di Mare faces, his courage and dignified approach to discussing his illness have resonated with many, offering a message of resilience and hope to cancer patients and their families. Aimac’s vice president praised Di Mare for his bravery and ability to inspire others with his strength and determination in the face of adversity.
