The Impact of the Pandemic on Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy: Insights from Caregivers’ Perspectives

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the emotional and social well-being of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy, a group already vulnerable due to their condition. A recent study by research teams from the UNC and Conicet delved into the effects of isolation on these individuals and their caregivers. Despite the challenges faced, the study found that families appreciated the possibilities for family reunions and self-care options that arose during the pandemic.

The study, led by professionals from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNC and the Center for Research and Studies on Culture and Society (Ciecs) of Conicet, aimed to understand how confinement conditions affected the social and emotional well-being of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. The results indicated that the pandemic significantly affected psychosocial dimensions of health, including psychological and emotional well-being, relationships with peers, and the school environment.

One interesting finding from the study was the positive assessment of self-care by individuals and their families. Despite the challenges, some mothers highlighted the achievements made in becoming therapists for their children during the pandemic. However, it was noted that care tasks are mainly taken on by women, highlighting the gender disparity in caregiving responsibilities.

The authors of the study emphasize the importance of considering the social and emotional aspects of health in addition to physical indicators, especially for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. By using health-related quality of life indicators, the research team gained valuable insights into the experiences and needs of this population.

Moving forward, the research team calls for more studies and data-driven approaches to inform health and disability policies for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. By understanding the impact of the pandemic on this group, policymakers can better address their needs and improve their quality of life.
