The indiscretion comes from the always well-informed sources of the Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. According to rumors, the device will not show an accurate temperature reading, but will advise the user to use a thermometer or in some cases to contact the doctor.

Although it may seem like a simple operation, the implementation of a wrist system for detecting fever must take into account a very large number of external factors to avoid erroneous readings. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple had already planned to equip the Apple Watch Series 7 of 2021 (the one currently on the market) with a thermometric function. However, precisely the insufficient accuracy of the reading algorithm would have convinced Apple to abandon the functionality after the first tests.

According to the analyst, Samsung also had to deal with the same problem: the Galaxy Watch 5, which will be presented in early August with the new folding smartphones of the Korean company, will most likely not include a system for detecting body temperature.
Gurman’s sources indicated that the sensor of the Apple Watch Series 8 it will be used for fever measurement only, but it cannot be excluded that already in this version of the Apple device use it to improve other software functions or enable new ones. In particular, the variation of the average body temperature, together with the parameters detected by other sensors of the device, could be used for the automatic detection of the menstrual cycle and fertile periods.

If the component and the temperature detection algorithms pass the latest quality tests, Apple will bring the new functions on the Watch Series 8 and on the “rugged” version of the device, a new “strengthened” model designed for extreme sports lovers. The fever reading will be one of the main differences with the new Apple Watch SE, the budget version of the smartwatch.
