Viterbo – Two cases of monkeypox at Belcolle hospital. The two cases concern two Bengali citizens who returned to Italy after they went to their country of origin.
The two were seen in the emergency room yesterday morning and presented with skin lesions, headaches and other symptoms.
Having known the origin, the Belcolle doctors carried out the analysis of the case. The two tested positive for the monkeypox test. The two were placed in solitary confinement, as were their families.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (the virus is transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in patients with smallpox, although clinically less severe. Smallpox, in fact, was transmitted more easily and was more lethal since about 30% of patients died. With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of vaccination, monkeypox emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.
