A “reckless rhetoric”: this was said by the spokesperson of the US National Security Council, John Kirby, in response to a question on the nuclear exercises near Ukraine ordered by Vladimir Putin. Kirby added that the US continues to monitor Moscow’s nuclear threat. The Russian president instructed the General Staff to prepare for exercises on the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons in the Southern Military District. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who together with French President Emmanuel Macron met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Paris, said she was “confident” that Beijing will continue to mitigate Russian nuclear threats and that it will use “its influence to end aggression against Ukraine.” For his part, Macron spoke of “coordination” with China being decisive for the situation in Ukraine. Xi reiterated that Beijing continues to hope that the conditions can be created for peace talks and a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
