A new study conducted by American researchers has revealed that consuming certain ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of premature death. The study, which lasted for approximately thirty-four years and involved over 100,000 participants, was led by a team of Harvard researchers in collaboration with universities in Brazil, China, and the Netherlands.

According to the report published in BMJ, the study identified various levels of health risks associated with different types of ultra-processed foods and the quantities consumed. The researchers found that consuming foods such as sweet drinks, ready-to-eat meats, desserts with dairy products, and certain confectionery items for breakfast could endanger one’s overall health.

However, the study also suggested that the health risks associated with these ultra-processed foods could be mitigated by improving the overall quality of one’s diet. By incorporating more vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins into their diet, individuals may be able to counteract the negative effects of consuming ultra-processed foods.

Specifically, the study found that individuals who consumed at least seven servings of ultra-processed foods per day had a 4% higher risk of premature death from any cause, and a 9% higher risk of death from neurodegenerative diseases. Interestingly, no significant associations were found between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and premature death from cancer, respiratory diseases, or heart disease.

In light of these findings, health experts recommend limiting the consumption of ultra-processed foods and focusing on a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods to reduce the risk of premature death.
