Shortage of Essential Drugs Raises Alarm in Italy
Concerns are growing in Italy over the shortage of essential drugs, with reports of medications being unavailable for months causing distress for patients with serious medical conditions.
The situation was brought to light by Mrs Maria Grazia in the Specchio dei Tempi column, who highlighted the unavailability of Creon 10000, a crucial medication for individuals with pancreatic problems. This was followed by another alarming report from a patient named Marco, who revealed the unavailability of Nadolol, a medication used to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, for the past six months.
The scarcity of medicines extends beyond these specific cases, with approximately 3500 products reported to be in short supply across Piedmont and Italy. This has prompted a question to the Ministry of Health from deputies Madia, Quartapelle, and Furfaro, seeking clarity on the matter.
The shortage encompasses a wide range of products, including common medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and antibiotics, as well as more specialized drugs. This has raised the question of how this scarcity is possible, especially for vital medications like Creon and Nadolol that are essential for managing serious health conditions.
The lack of clear explanations from producers and regulatory authorities has led to speculation about the underlying causes of the shortage. Some have suggested that production costs, transport, and packaging expenses may be contributing factors, while others point to a shortage of excipients from third countries and the pursuit of higher profit margins by wholesalers on foreign markets.
Amidst the growing concerns, efforts are being made to address the shortage, with the Region mandating hospital pharmacies to supply Creon to patients unable to find it in local pharmacies. Additionally, an agreement has been established to procure similar drugs authorized abroad, aimed at consolidating orders and obtaining better prices.
Despite these measures, reports indicate that pharmacy stocks in Piedmont are still exhausted or in short supply, prompting the need for alternative sourcing solutions. The situation has raised concerns among healthcare professionals and patients, with fears that the shortage of essential drugs could become a long-term issue.
