Sanctions against Putin, the conflict between Russia and the United States escalates. The new sanctions that the US will impose on Russia in response to the death of Alexej Navalny and on the eve of the second anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine have been announced. According to CNN, which cites a Treasury official as a source, there should be more than 500 Russian targets subject to sanctions. This is the most important tranche of sanctions imposed by Washington against Moscow since the beginning of the war. The objectives should concern support for Vladimir Putin’s war machine and a series of sanctions also towards the managers of the prison where Navalny lost his life.

Russia has described the new package of American sanctions as “cynical” interference, intended to divide Russians ahead of presidential elections in mid-March which are expected to see Vladimir Putin triumphantly re-elected. “The new restrictions are another brazen and cynical attempt to interfere in Russia’s internal affairs, to force us to give up our vital interests, to divide Russian society on the eve… of the presidential elections,” denounced the Moscow ambassador in the United States, Anatoly Antonov, quoted by the Russian state agency Tass.
