As the Senator of Fratelli d’Italia Zaffini also states in a parliamentary question to the Minister of Health, 90% of the Italian population over 12 has completed the vaccination cycle: a percentage that corresponds to 51 million people.
Despite the large numbers the vaccine doses are in excess: in fact, as a whole, almost 142 million had been delivered to the regions, then only 137 and a half million administered.
We therefore find ourselves with a deficit of almost 4 and a half million vaccine doses which, to date, are not updated with the new variants of the virus but above all in correspondence with the expiration date. This is certainly due to a failure to run to the third and fourth dose which, lately, thanks to the lowering of infections and the danger of the virus, has not happened.
The expiration date of the remaining doses is between June and August 2022, which is why the regions have raised an alarm. In response, Aifa, at the suggestion of the pharmaceutical company PfizerBiontechhe decided to extend the shelf life of the drug: from six months to nine months. The old expiration date has therefore been moved by three months.
The government has remained silent on this, so much so that there is no trace of this news in any newspaper: the purpose of Sen. Zaffini’s question is precisely in this direction, in fact. How does the government intend to place the thousands of expiring vaccine doses? How many doses were destroyed in Italy because they expired before they could be inoculated? How will the dose supply really needed be quantified in the future?
